Departure Bay

Departure bay has been a place of commerce for what historians say for about 2000 years. Nanaimo Harbour and Departure Bay were named "Bocas de Winthuysen" by a Spanish naval officer, Francisco de Eliza, in 1791. It was a place of trade for the Snuneymuxw nation until Robert Dunsmuir developed it as coal wharves for the shipment of coal from the Wellington Mine. Today Departure bay is home to a B.C. ferry terminal and sees nearly 1,600,000 passengers coming thru its waters each year. The area boasts recreation amenities such as a waterfront walk way, children’s park, activity center known as the Kin hut and a favourite hiking spike amongst the locals called sugarloaf mountain which features beautiful views over the departure bay harbour.

The homes located in the departure Bay Area are mostly mid century and many feature ocean views on large lots. Schools in the area include 2 schools, Cilaire and Departure bay elementary schools. As well there is a high school, Wellington Secondary servicing the area.

Jingle Pot

The jingle pot area of Nanaimo blends rural charm with a historical legacy rooted in coal mining. The homes in this area are mainly rural and include many farms and large acreage style homes. There are a few subdivisions on the south and north ends of Jingle that benefit from city water and sewer systems however most of the properties in the jingle pot area are on well and septic systems. Schools in this area include mountain view elementary and Nanaimo district secondary school. A local favourite is a 3 mile hiking trail that leads to ammonite waterfalls located in the Benson creek falls regional park.  Jingle Pot started as a coal mining community in the late 1800’s in fact it gots its name from a "jingle pot" which was a pot that had a few stones in it, attached to a rope. Miners pulled on the rope to make the pot make noise when they wanted to signal that it was time to start hoisting carts full of coal out of the mine.
